Technology-Therapist-Patient: a subtle combination
Professor Dr.-Ing. Norbert Harthun, Leipzig, Germany
1 About the term subtle¹ energy²-structures³
Though the title of this paper suggests a very broad field of research, in the time available I will use examples to provide “circumstantial evidence” for the action of subtle energy structures. The physicist William Tiller, for example, views the term from a technical perspective. According to Werthmüller [1], Tiller introduced the concept of “subtle energies” into physics and expressed the idea in the following way: “By subtle fields or energies I don’t simply mean weak fields or energies … Based on our experiences to date, subtle fields are very weakly linked to our electromagnetic fields so that we normally only perceive small effects. But under favourable circumstances they can interact powerfully and bring about major effects. I believe that the future technology we develop in this area will uncover latent energy content and the opportunities for utilising such subtle fields, which are of a much greater magnitude than the fields known at the present time.” Table 1 lists a selection of concepts, some of which will be familiar already. It would be possible to speak overall of an “energy of a thousand names” because there are many more designations besides those listed here.
¹ subtle: delicate, fine, precise, difficult [Duden]
² energy: Greek enérgeia »effectiveness«

2 Clarification of “force”, “energy” and “information”
Let me introduce another clarification of terminology: In olden times the concept of “force” was dominant and even today is often used to denote “energy”. This is related to energy being previously called “life force” and in philosophical literature the abbreviated form “force” has survived. Energy in physics is seen as a quantitative concept (“cluster”) and has at first glance little to do with information.
To promote our understanding here we can place information on a level with structure. Let me give you a good example of how information relates to energy. Imagine someone hurling a solid lump of plasticine through a window pane. The window is smashed because of the kinetic energy of the plasticine, and the culprit is found because of the structure of the fingerprints left in the plasticine. The plasticine
(E = m c2) therefore provides information about the culprit from the prints! In general it is true that information (in our real world) requires some form of energy as a carrier.
Allow me another subtle play on words here: both these words taken together – E (energy) and I (information or their initials produce the modern “Ei [German word for egg] of Columbus” – a symbol of life! This also explains the choice of the term “subtle energy structures”. It unites energy and information in a subtle form.
All that’s missing is a reference to “flow”. Our trust in the ancient knowledge that lies behind the concept of “Chi” (Table 1), our observation of our world of matter made up of energy and countless information
Table 1 Overview of subtle energy structures drawing on Werthmüller [1]
processes permit a model representation which suggests a constantly flowing information-bearing energy flow as the basis of our biophysical reality. The terms “all pervading” and “connecting”, understood dynamically, are indeed highly suggestive of flow and, it has to be said, static conditions have little or no bearing for the world around us.
3 Electromagnetic perception of the body
Hartmut Heine writes in his definitive book [2; p. 139] under the heading ‘Energy flow in basic matter’: “Bioelectrical examination procedures such as ECG, EEG, EMC, ENG etc. belong to the standard repertoire of clinical and applied medicine. The physician predominantly trained in biochemistry is, however, often unaware that each biochemical reaction is accompanied by a biophysical reaction in the form of field interactions and vice versa. The synthesis capabilities of cells including fibroblasts can be provoked in vivo and in vitro through electromagnetic fields and/or electrical stimuli”. “However humans emit per second 1021 radiation particles as invisible heat and microwaves. This is the equivalent of 100 Watts of energy per second. The surface area of an adult is between 1.5 to 2.0 m2 resulting in a daily radiation emission totalling 6000 to 9000 calories. Since we receive from our environment 5000-7000 calories in radiation there is only a difference of 1000-2000 calories (Overview from Ho et al. 1994)” [2; p. 141].
“From an electromagnetic perspective our bodies are made up of a rapidly pulsating network of energy fields, which interact with each other briefly while developing interference patterns. Matter can therefore also be seen as a manifestation of such interferences (Ho et al. 1994)” [2; p. 141]. The Chinese professor Charlie Zhang, who worked together with F. A. Popp, is of a similar opinion when he describes the body as an “Electromagnetic Body” [3]. He writes: “The electromagnetic body is not only very complicated but also extremely dynamic” … With its electromagnetic organs, such as for instance chakras, it is permanently and very rapidly changing in intensity, colour and shape like an ocean in a ferocious storm, especially during intense changes in emotional and physical states.
4 Self-organisation and Resonance
The healthy human being is not only a flushed through “tube” or predominantly water-filled “vessel” (Figure 1) but everything in him is outstandingly structured and arranged – in short BICOM optima®lly organised. There are plenty of natural scientific and ideological theories for this well-accepted fact about living systems, upon which we do not wish to elaborate here.
Contrasting with “self-organisation”, the result of an entertaining form of “external organisation” is shown here (Figure 2).
The notion that “self”-organisation must involve resonance processes is an obvious one.
With resonance, energy is absorbed and in the case of spatial processes the former is identical to standing waves, which may form structures, i.e. register information, in any way so desired by means of their anti-nodes and nodes. Examples of this are the classic sand figures of an acoustically excited vibrating membrane (Figure 3) [5]. For systems of increasing complexity, ever higher frequencies excited by a dynamic flow of energy become possible.
In this sense man can be seen as a “self”- organising “multi-resonance system” because within him exist the most varied forms which preserve and even continuously renew “themselves”.
With regard to the multiplicity of oscillations/resonances in the body, many frequency distributions and/or periodic times of circulatory and respiratory rhythms in humans obtained by empirical means have been presented in graphic form [6]. “The frequencies are mapped from both sides inwards towards the centre. The circulatory side shows, in addition to the pulse rhythm, the respiratory circulation fluctuations which correspond to the rhythm of breathing, the 10-second rhythm of blood pressure and the so-called minute rhythm of peripheral circulation, which prefers a 1-minute periodic time in muscle and also the 30-second band in skin and liver at the same time. On the respiratory side we see, besides breathing frequency distribution, the so-called higher breathing periods of the Biot or Cheyne-Stokes type, which overlie the breathing pattern and – as we showed earlier – are mostly synchronised with the 1-minute rhythm of peripheral circulation (Hildebrandt 1961)” (Figure 4, next page).
5 One or two details about the body field
Architects like to speak about the “third skin”, meaning the building; in which case the second skin would be our clothes. This is seen in terms of matter and is a very broad classification. There is one essential component missing here: the body does not end at the skin!
Apart from this there are numerous names for the body field but we will use the traditional word “aura”. Traditional science already makes use of the body’s infrared radiation in the form of night vision equipment, for example. And some time ago human microwave emissions were measured – again with the help of technology:
“On 24 October 2004, during the open day of the German Aerospace Centre (DLR e.V.) in Oberpfaffenhofen, visitors were able to see this for themselves. Using experimental equipment, a picture was taken of a group of people in both the optical and radio wave range at a frequency of 90 GHz. This involved a beam antenna
that was fitted with a mechanical omni- directional laser scanner scanning radio beams line by line and directing these to a receiver. The result can be seen clearly in the image on the right with the radiation from people shown as a bright contour against a ‘cooler’ wall. While in the optical photo the people block the sunlight and produce shadows in the foreground, in the
radio image the reflected radiation from the people can be seen on the ground as a reflection. Even the building in the background and the tree in Figure 5 top right, clearly emit waves in the radio wave range.
Besides the technically measureable (radio) aura, there are many reports about more subtle layers. The physician and accredited pioneer of modern radiaesthsia research, Ernst Hartmann, writes: “The biodynamic fields around a human being and around other living systems too are … an expression of our physical condition, transmission and reception fields of a complex nature, the space where cosmic, earthly and human energies meet. They feature cybernetic control processes that are systematic, meaningful, purposeful and quite brilliant – truly a divine wonder” [8].
Charlie Zhang, who was mentioned earlier [3], writes at the end of his article: “At this point, it would be interesting to recall the theory of the seven levels of body in Indian philosophy. The dense chemical body … may be only the first level of seven bodies.
The electromagnetic body, which has so far been neglected by biological science and allopathic medicine and may well be the main focus of biological science and regulation medicine in the future, may only constitute the second level in such a range of seven bodies. Of course, it is, at this moment, too difficult to say definitely whether there are any other bodies or not beyond the dense chemical body and the electromagnetic body before we have clear scientific evidence. (Underscore by the present writer). He concludes with the comment that science will certainly grow from today’s “baby stage” of knowledge and beyond the electromagnetic body.
There are many more subjective field reports about enveloping subtle structures. In this connection we have come across a representation which may possibly correspond to Zhang’s words (Figure 6a; next page) [9]. We have selected in addition a further image, which conveys a more dynamic impression [10]. With the first we are reminded of the different sensibilities of the individual, while in Figure 6b we are clearly reminded of the
characteristics of flow (echoes of Chi! Funnily enough, in German when written in reverse it spells “ICH” [EN = ‘I’]). The quote from Mrs Burki-Kiessling may help explain the characteristics of energy flow: “Popp was able to show by experimentation the above-average level of biophoton emissions in the hands of healers … True healing must … restore the energy balance – the perfect network of biophotons” [11].
6 Examples of the mode of action of subtle energy structures
The following examples are very old ones, and deliberately so. For one reason out of respect for the early work done and also because with regard to the basic principle they are still enlightening.
“At a conference organised by Brügemann GmbH on 10 October 1987 in Starnberg the biophysicist C.W. Smith presented a very interesting video, which had been shot in Scotland. The test subject in the film was an allergy patient who reacted with considerable mobility restrictions to allergens. Whenever she came into contact with one of the allergens she was no longer able to walk normally. She had to force one leg in front of the other and then lurch backwards when trying to make
herself turn. This severely impaired gait also occurred when a sine wave oscillator with a wire 1.5 m long was switched on to serve as an antenna at a distance of 3 m from the patient, whereby a frequency of 2.5 Hz was shown to be active … In the case of the … patient with mobility disturbance the video also showed that 154 Hz acted as a neutralising frequency. As soon as the sine wave oscillator was switched to this frequency, the patient was able to walk normally again and experienced no problems.
This was followed by an even more interesting experiment. A small tube of water was placed for 1⁄4 hour next to the antenna of the sine wave oscillator, which was set at 154 Hz. The tube was then removed and the oscillator reset to a frequency of 2.5 Hz, the frequency that had proved troublesome for the patient. Once again the patient was only able to trudge wearily around the room.
However, as soon as she was handed the tube treated with the neutralising frequency of 154 Hz, she could immediately walk normally again. The water had stored the 154 Hz frequency and the experiment still worked even several weeks later with the same tube. [12].
Let’s now look at complementary4 medicine and Figure 5 shows the first standard device used in electroacupuncture5 [13], which some of you may remember well. We do not need to go into EAP diagnostics here of course.
Years later an electrically conductive aluminium body with holes (“measuring honeycomb”) was connected to the resistance measuring circuit, with the help of which medication suitable for the patient was tested in the now familiar method (Figure 8). Traditional physics is totally unable to explain that in an electrical resistance measuring circuit (Figure 8a) a different current flows when the appropriate medication is placed in the honeycomb.
4 Complementary: The relationship between two mutually excluding but complementing concepts (e.g. male/female). [Bibliographisches Institut & F. A. Brockhaus AG, 2004]
5 Developed around 1953 by R. Voll and F. Werner. K+F: Manufacturer Kraiss und Fritz
Galle writes on this: “Since the medication … is in a sealed glass ampoule and none of its substance comes into contact with the electrical measuring circuit, the … effect … compared with the … models then and today is incomprehensible” [14; p. 32 and following pages]. At the time the term “medication information” was introduced, “because only non-material information from the medication could be responsible for the effects … more explicitly termed … “medicamentous oscillation”. This term “does not have to have any physical content, although … the electromagnetic interaction must at least play some part”. This touches on the involvement of electromagnetic waves. More on this later.
By way of comparison Figure 8b) shows a traditional electronic resistance measuring circuit. Clearly this cannot be compared to test arrangement (a) since in (a) a hand and an acupuncture point of the patient are connected between the applicators and – let’s not forget – the patient’s hand is being held by the therapist’s hand, while the therapist’s other hand is pressing the stylus applicator on the acupuncture point.
The patient and therapist enter into the overall system as living beings and must be responsible for creating the sensitivity of that system to medication. They provide the source of the subtle energy structures which we must assume influence the charge carriers in the electric circuit (electrons).
7 Coupling: Technology – Man
To diagnose and treat a human being with a machine a connection must exist between both – a “truism”. On closer consideration, however, there arise a whole series of questions – and possible solutions (see also Table 3). On the one hand technical signals, on the other physiological reactions. Both should fit together as well as possible. Technology ends at the material surface of the person, the skin. Here too there are the most varied areas and points, the itemisation of which would take a very long time. Let us just cite the acupuncture points as one example because they have already been mentioned indirectly (Figure 8).
In Table 2 (next page), the most diverse combinations are possible, which also occur depending on the manufacturer. The combination in the top line: left “microstream”, f = 0 and far right “point applicator” applied for instance to electroacupuncture after Voll from its early days. When talking about “light” we need to think in terms of colour in general, modulated laser emitters, etc.
8 Model representations for bioresonance therapy
Endogeneous bioresonance therapy Galle has the following opinion on bioresonance therapy: “The fundamental physical action of this low-energy transfer of information can only be an electromagnetic interaction” [14; p. 22]. He refers among other things to measurements using an oscillograph of the external field around a healthy person, which show equally distributed low- frequency electromagnetic oscillations with only slight variations in amplitude – i.e. noise. Its intensity lies clearly above the noise of the machine (Figure 9 top).
Table 2 Some methods of access when “communicating” with the human body
With regard to such processes in humans, Popp also found an even distribution with slight fluctuations in the number of biophotons per wave length and volume interval. Analogous with the biophoton theory, Galle writes: “The oscillators of low- frequency oscillations appear however to be no longer exclusively at the atomic and molecular level, as is the case with biophotons, but also at the level of the cell, the cell layers, the organs, the organ systems and the organism. At the same time, beat frequencies of atomic and molecular oscillators as well as subatomic oscillators too (e.g. spin resonances) presumably form an essential element of this low-frequency oscillation field …
All oscillations (oscillators) are dynamically connected to each other with relatively low fluctuations in amplitude …
Active noise is the external expression of a communicative ‘oscillation fluid’ or ‘bioplasma’ [14; p 68-74]”. In the diseased organism a given number of individual oscillators e.g. cells or organs, are blocked or overactive, such that their signals are off-beat (Figure 9) which means even distribution is disturbed.
Exogeneous bioresonance therapy (substance oscillations) Galle [14] makes reference to Strube and Stolz who support the following hypothesis:
Electromagnetic background noise produces structural analyses (EMSA) of substrate molecules and microwaves. The latter convey the structural analyses.
Structural analysis is a very abstract concept meaning “a complex mixture of frequencies of different amplitudes” [14; p. 94]. The frequency mix occurs because of the self-rotation (spin) of the elementary particles, which thereby possess an independent magnetic field (“bar magnet”) – (Figure 10). Together with the earth’s magnetic field and the stimulation from matching frequencies from the background noise (resonance), the axis of the spin of the elementary particles also rotates (precession; marked with red dots in the figure). This causes an electromagnetic wave to be emitted, which then propagates. Numerous nuclear spins connect with each other in the whole atomic union and with the electron shell such that a great many molecule-specific waves are emitted.
Ludwig too emphasises the very broad frequency spectra, each different for each substance. Overall he described three types of wave of different origin (Figure 11), which are normally in equilibrium. In today’s civilisation these signals are, he states, weakened from underground (YIN) – (asphalt coating, excavation) while those from above (YANG) are in excess due to stress, thus endangering the organism. “Worldwide all substrates vibrate (excited by heat in the environment) and organisms are synchronous, i.e. in rhythm if the frequencies are equal. This is because the relatively strong Schumann waves which span the whole globe act as a synchronisation signal.”
<div class=”layoutArea”
Only in this way can medication testing and therapy work.
Substance oscillations cannot be physically documented
According to what has been said here, the body must therefore be regarded as a “multi-resonance system” of numerous oscillators. These must be non-linear oscillators for in nature non-linear systems are the norm (we need only think of exponential growth graphs).
9 Response of an influenced non-linear oscillator (simulation)
(Natural) science is always putting forward models of reality and these can change dramatically when new knowledge is gained. In order to represent the behaviour of such non-linear oscillators for instance,ONEsuch oscillator has been simulated mathematically – the Duffing oscillator and its equation
Firstly it is allowed to oscillate freely without influence from an ac signal. A (near) harmonious oscillation (sine wave) and associated spectral line(s) is observed (Figure 12, previous page). If you subject the oscillator to an ac signal of amplitude 1, then you observe Figure 13 (previous page) at the output. The change is immediately observable, more spectral lines occur and these differ in height. A further example with a drive signal of amplitude 5 is presented in Figure 14. Now a completely different pattern is observed with more marked differences in height. In addition, different frequencies occur in each of the three examples.
This simulation of the shift of just ONE non-linear oscillator gives an idea of how the even distribution of oscillations in the healthy body (Figure 9) can be disturbed by outside influences. The reality of the human body is one of highly complex diversity. To summarise: The explanations of Popp, Galle and Ludwig regarding bioresonance therapy are based essentially on traditional scientific findings – namely electromagnetic waves) fields and waves, electron and nuclear spin, ultimately on moving charge carriers. And here we come up against a boundary in today’s science. It is still not known what precisely ‘electrical charge’ is. On closer enquiry you will only receive a paraphrased definition such as ‘special material state’, which does not really help us at all! Latest scientific findings: Electric charge is defined as a “special material state”
The electron – the elementary charge contained in all matter, therefore in us too, remains something of a mystery. In traditional science it changes character depending on the experiment, between particle and wave, and not much else can be learnt. The physicist Jean E. Charon however goes further and states: “The electron6 demonstrates an autonomous individuality … it is in fact carrier of a spiritual space” [17; pp 85, 86]. “Space-time may be represented with the material/spirit realms on either side of a straight line (Figure 15). This straight line is the boundary between the ‘exterior’ of space-time (above the line) and the ‘interior’ of space-time (below the line) … Everything above the boundary line is visible or, in more general terms, our sensory organs have access to these things. Everything beneath the line is directly accessible to our spirit but only indirectly to our sensory organs” [18; pp 53-54]. There exist a great many representations and names for layers of existence. Here we have selected the representation postulated by theoretical physicist Burkhard Heim because it is well known and often cited. The table on the right shows his five layers (sub physis to pneuma) – (Table 3). On the left verbal descriptions, on the right in the language of mathematics. “Matter” can be seen on the vertical separation line. Above there it passes into the layers psyche and pneuma/spirit. Compared with Charon’s representation, the universal and stable elementary particle – the “electron” – occupies the five layers fully according to Heim. Thus the two confirm each other’s theories, although Heim’s contains a much finer sub-division. 6 Current statement from Turtur (found after manuscript production): “Every living being is a spatial energy converter; for each consists of atoms and the electrons are supplied with spatial energy. He can, he says, show that electrons draw their energy from the quantum vacuum“ [29]. So much then for model theory representations which go far beyond what can be measured. Luckily, they are complemented and confirmed by case studies of what is observed in practice. For those familiar with the bio-tensor, pendulum and/or dowsing, making the leap into the area of “subtle energy structures”, as we generally term them, presents no problem. Due to time constraints we have only listed here the “distilled” experience from decades of research by the dowser Willem Busscher 7 7 Willem Busscher: specialist in high-frequency technology, head of development with Philips (Netherlands), long-time head of Philips Apparatefabrik Wetzlar. Decades of radiaesthetic research, numerous publications, incl. in “Wetter-Boden-Mensch – Zeitschrift für Geobiologie“ Thus it follows that those who support the electromagnetic viewpoint are just as correct as those postulating the unconventional and more subtle model: Both belong inseparably together. However, it is the subtle structures that are biologically effective.
11 An abstract cybernetic model for these processes
Introducing the infinite Zycha writes: “According to the holistic approach, every system fundamentally has the entire information of the universe at its disposal, as expressed by the universal connectedness of every system with every other through the network of vertical interactions. Thus every system in principle has all the information needed to relate correctly to another” [27].
If you wish to demonstrate connections but don’t know the details, it is good to draw block diagrams (“black boxes”), which you can conveniently connect – a standard procedure in cybernetics (Figure 20). A simple model was designed, whereby the graphic representation is an artificial one with the subject, counterpart and infinite being separate. We use the term “infinite” to represent the “entire information of the universe” after Zycha. It is non-local i.e. a “memory” not linked to place or time. Every atom/molecule of the counterpart is linked to the infinite via channel 2 (in technical terminology). The same of course applies to the human being (channel 1). By “counterpart” we mean the device and/or therapist. In short we can express this as follows: Man and counterpart are linked to one another both via the bridge of the infinite and also directly. In other words, a varying flow of information in both directions is possible. What is happening here in detail is (still) largely unknown. After we had designed the model, we suddenly understood the words of the poet, through here he describes the highest “layer” of transcendence: Just as the sun’s rays go earthwards, So a ray goes from God into the heart of every thing. Through this ray the thing is linked to God, And each feels thereby to have come from God. No such ray goes sideways from thing to thing, Only a nebulous streak of light if anything. You will never recognise the thing from such lights; The dark separating wall will always separate you from it. Instead you must ascend to God on your ray And descend to the thing on its ray. Only then will you see the thing as it is and not as it seems, When you see it united with yourself in God. Friedrich Rückert; Die Weisheit der Brahmanen (Wisdom of Brahman); 4th edition. 1837; p. 373 The cybernetic model provides the opportunity to introduce details in the course of new research. For the time being it is clear enough to describe many things. A detailed but also somewhat more specific description and several other examples can be found in [28]. For the calculations and the associated simulation for the non-linear Duffing oscillator, my sincere thanks go to my wife Professor Dr.-Ing. Innes Rennert.
